Nominate a beneficiary
You’ve worked hard to build up your super, so it’s important you tell us who you want to get this benefit if you die.
Nominating a beneficiary is important
If you don’t nominate a beneficiary, the Trustee of the Fund (the people who manage your super fund), subject to superannuation law, will decide who gets your super death benefit.
What is a beneficiary
Beneficiaries are the people you want to nominate to receive your death benefit when you die.
You can nominate your beneficiary by making either a non-binding or a binding nomination.
A non-binding nomination is when your wishes about who should receive your death benefit when you die are a guide only and are not binding on the Trustee.
A binding nomination means the Trustee is bound by the nomination(s) you make when paying your death benefit, as long as your nomination is valid.
If you want to discuss your options, we’re here to help.
How to make a nomination
To make a binding nomination, you must complete and sign a Binding Death Benefit Nomination form in the presence of two witnesses and then you need to post the completed form to us (it can’t be emailed).
When filling in the form, it's important to:
- Make no mistakes – crossed out information of changes can be disputed. If you make a mistake, please start a new form.
- Have valid witnesses – your witnesses must be 18 years or older and not be the beneficiary. The witnesses must witness and sign on the same date as you.
- Use whole percentages – nominated amounts must be in whole percentages only and total 100%. For example, if you have three children you can’t give 33.3% to each child.
If you’d like help completing the form, drop into our Fund office in Milton at 299 Coronation Drive or we can talk you through the process over the phone.
